While I make every effort to provide photos that show the colours and proportions of each piece, it's an imperfect science (in my hands, anyway)! Don't compare the size of one photograph to another, as the scale will almost certainly be off. Instead please check the actual dimensions of each piece carefully, and remember that colours may show up differently on your screen compared to mine.

Saskatchewan Snow Squall, 2023 - 24x24" - C$425.00
In November 2022, we found ourselves driving between Regina and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. If you've been there, you know that the terrain is flat, and there is very little in the way of a windbreak along that route. As I was in the passenger seat, I had the opportunity to observe the landscape and shoot photos through the window, as I am in the habit of doing. For this painting, I wanted to create the effect of obscuring the landscape with paint, just like the snow was doing in real life.
Mixed media (gesso for added texture, acrylic and latex paints; spray paint) on cradled birch panel; some of the panel is left exposed.
Across the Inlet, 2022 - 24x48"
C$665.00
This mixed media piece is painted on cradled birchwood, with parts of the panel left exposed. On the more abstract end of my style, it represents sitting by the lake and gazing across the water at the trees on the other side. Like a lazy summer's day, it's meant to be contemplative and zen, with few details to distract.
Mixed media (acrylic and latex paints, liquid asphalt) on cradled birch panel.
Shining Through, 2023 - 10x10" mini
C$75.00
This small sunset was an opportunity for me to test out some new acrylic paints. Love them! The pigment load really allows me to get colours which are way more intense... even when mixed and toned down, as in this sunset sky.
Mixed media (acrylic and latex paints, liquid asphalt) on canvas.
First in a series of three small forest paintings. Latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt, (rubberized), silt.
Second in a series of three small forest paintings. Latex and acrylic paints, silt.
Third in a series of three small forest paintings . Latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized), silt.
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized), Carbothello pencils
That feeling of crossing the Prairies on #1 West (or East for that matter), and seeing the fields of wheat spreading out in all directions... Follow the train tracks, notice the grain elevators punctuating the landscape. The prairie landscape is very beautiful in a minimalist kind of way - almost like it's been abstracted without any help from the artist.
Three Pines Reflected, Early Morning, July 2021 - 20x20" - C$230.00
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the materials is intentional*
For this piece, I really wanted to depict a northern landscape reflected in a body of water. I've had the opportunity to visit relatively northern parts of BC, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, and I feel that this painting conveys the chill of an early morning. If you have gone camping in northern parts of Canada you know the feeling - no matter how hot the day, it begins and ends with a sweater.
Second in a series of three small paintings for Pride Month. Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized).
Third in a series of three small paintings for Pride Month. Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized).
Bois Brule, June 2021 - 18x24" - C$250.00
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, gold pigment powder
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
This painting was started with no particular intention other than to include some abstracted pine trees. In the end, however, I couldn't help but see a scorched earth landscape. Appropriate, given the drought and forest fires that we are seeing across much of Canada (and the world) this year.
Wild Horses, June 2021 - 18x24" - C$250.00
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, conte crayon
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
Organic abstract landscape shapes. My friend Anna saw horses, hence the title!
Road to Big White, 2023 - 12x12"
C$95.00
One of our favourite places in the world is Big White, BC. This amazing ski destination is just 45 minutes by car from downtown Kelowna. The first half of the trip takes you along a highway out of the city, and the second half is on a dedicated road, winding through trees and past rushing streams, and it's pretty much all uphill! In one of the last turns before you arrive, there's an opening in the trees, and the view is just spectacular. That's the moment represented in this small painting. Mixed media on cradled birch panel, acrylic and latex paints, liquid asphalt.
Headland, 2023 - 12x12"
C$105.00
Stormy Seas, 2023 - 12x12"
C$105.00
Beach Walk after Sunset, 2022 - 30x24" - C$400.00
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, sea salt, liquid asphalt, silt, conte crayon
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
There's really nothing like a beach vacation. As soon as I hear the waves rolling onto the shore, even my breathing changes. The beach on a sunny day is a source of bright joy, but once the sun sets, the excitement changes to calm contentedness. The crowds have departed, so chances are you will have the beach all to yourself when you go for a walk. You don't have to go anywhere or do anything, just feel the sand between your toes, breathe deep, and be.
Sunrise, Thousand Islands, 2022 - 30x24"" - C$400.00
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
Canada is such a beautiful country, from coast to coast to coast. And you don't have to go far from home to find that beauty! The Thousand Islands area is a short drive from Ottawa, basically just an hour due south - and maybe a bit west. It's a spectacular area, with historical small towns and amazing views. I do plenty of sunsets; this sunrise scene is my abstract take on looking across the mighty St. Lawrence River just as the sun is coming up.
Mixed media - acrylic and latex paints, sea salt, liquid asphalt
A new perspective: Bird's Eye View. Imagine that you are flying above a beach in Costa Rica. Waves rolling in to your left, jungle to the right. Some people seem to struggle with this view, while others absolutely love it! For me, this is the ultimate fantasy - after a long winter, I'm dreaming of warm weather and walks on a beach. I've never actually been to Costa Rica, but this is what it looks like in my dreams.
Moody Blues, 2022, 10x10" mini - C$60.00
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt
In literature, the environment - weather, season, time of day - is sometimes used to reflect human emotions, or mood. This painting just gets me feeling a whole range of emotions. The sky will be fully dark within minutes; a day is done. Whatever burdens you have been dealing with, it's time to lay them down. Tomorrow is another day.
Dreamy Landscape , 2022 - 24x10" - CA$140.00
Mixed Media (acrylic and latex paints) on canvas
This is a fantasy summer landscape... I got started on this painting, then fell in love with the soft, dreamy, effect "as is," and decided that I did not want to add trees or anything else...
Mixed media - acrylic and latex paints, liquid asphalt
Here I've reverted to my signature horizontal background, but added a mixture of birches and darker trees in the foreground. Once again, the background makes me think of a spring thaw, with the combination of greens and blues... perhaps you see a rushing stream, a glimpse of sky? The trees are heavily textured; the two in the center of the composition overlap, and appear to be hugging.
Mixed media - acrylic and latex paints, liquid asphalt
This piece is a bit of a departure for me: I tend to work in horizontal lines. but here the background and subject matter are all verticals. The negative space is painted in a soft green colour, which provides a contrast to the bright white birch trees. The background has a soft-focus watercolour effect, while the trees themselves are highly textured. These trees do seem to be protecting the forest beyond...
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
This is another scene based on the view from Big White Mountain (Kelowna, BC), looking out over the Monashees. Up on Big White, we are often in the clouds... but sometimes we are actually above the clouds! On this occasion, the clouds obscured the valley below. As the sun went down behind the mountaintops, the clouds took on a violet tinge. The effect was that the mountains were actually floating on the bed of clouds. Magical, fugitive, moments.
PEI North Shore, Facing West, September 2021 - 40x32" - C$725.00
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, marble powder, liquid asphalt, silt
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
The summer of 2018 found us on Prince Edward Island, in a relatively remote and quirky seaside VRBO near Abrams Village. The hosts, who also lived on the property, were friendly, and they encouraged us to make use of their lawn and fire pit. Sitting there, perched above a red sand beach, we enjoyed amazing views, including clear-weather glimpses of the New Brunswick coast in the distance. The nightly show, aka sunset, was beyond words. I really wanted to recreate the feeling of that moment in time, including the flecks of light reflected in the water as the sun sank below the horizon.
The Narrows, St John's Harbour, August 2021 - 36x12" - C$250.00
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, marble powder, liquid asphalt, silt
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
A few years ago, we had the chance to visit Newfoundland. I loved the view from our hotel window: a narrow slice of sky and ocean visible through the entrance to St John's Harbour. The trick to turning this view into an abstract landscape painting, for me, was to strike a precarious balance. I wanted to create a scene that is abstract yet reminiscent of the sea, and calm yet dynamic enough to engage the viewer. Texture turned out to be the key.

Cottage Inlet, 2023 - 24x36" - SOLD
This painting is based on a photograph which I shot on Centennial Lake, Greater Madawaska, Ontario. The zig-zag clouds reflected in the water were just too perfect to resist. In high summer, the days are so long... Just before night finally settles in, the sky is still bright, yet dusk has already fallen down on the water (or on the ground). Time to light a campfire! To create the light-to-dark ombre effect in this piece, I misted - very carefully - with not one, not two, not three, but four colours of spray paint.
Mixed media (acrylic and latex paints; spray paint; liquid asphalt) on cradled birch panel.
Ripple Effect, 2023 - 12x12"
SOLD
An abstract representation of sun sparkling and reflections on water. To me, this looks like pure summer. It doesn't even matter what is being reflected... It's just about feeling the warmth and enjoying a time out of everyday life.
Acrylic and latex paints on canvas.
Floating Island, 2023 - 24x18" - SOLD
If you follow the Madawaska River south-west of Arnprior, you'll go by Burnstown, then Calabogie, then Black Donald Lake, and you'll eventually reach Centennial Lake... There, the road takes you past a boat launch and over a bridge. Our cottage, and my studio, is located just a few minutes from the bridge, and we frequently go for walks there. At the right time of morning, and in the right conditions, the island - viewed from the bridge - really does seem to float. This particular painting was a year in the making. I used three colours of spray paint, new technique for me.
Mixed Media: acrylic, latex, and spray paints; liquid asphalt.
Three Peaks, 2022, 24x16" - $220.00 - SOLD
Another piece showcasing a range of textures. This painting represents the view of a specific section of the Monashee mountain range, as viewed from Big White village. Once again, the sky, mountains, and foreground trees are painted using 100% abstract techniques... and yet, the piece comes together as representational. Along with texture, colour is also an important Element of Art used in this painting. I was enchanted by the contrast between the yellow sky and the purple mountains in the inspiration photo, and very much enjoyed using this pared-down but effective palette in this composition.
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt, gesso, spray paint
Taylor's Terroir (@blackbankhill), 2022 - 15x30" - SOLD
*Collection of Michael Faulkner and Sylvie Begin*
Linas and I have fallen in love with Black Bank Hill, a craft winery in Beamsville, Ontario. Owner Taylor Emerson took a leap of faith when he purchased this inspiring 20-acre piece of land. He's joined by winemaker Jonathan McLean, who brings science, art, and passion to the winemaking process. Can't wait to see, and taste, what these two produce together.
Mixed Media on Cradled Birch Panel - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt, finished with epoxy resin
Climb Every Mountain, 2022, 12x12" - SOLD
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt, on cradled birch panel
*Collection of Kristin Loeper*
This highly textured piece is painted on cradled birch panel. It represents the feeling of hiking in the mountains. For us, most recently, that means BC. The trees are probably the most textured elements in anything I have painted to date. Taken individually, the sky, trees, and foreground are painted using 100% abstract techniques... and yet, the piece comes together as representational. Part of why I love what I do so very much.
Dreamy Seascape, 2022 - 10x24" - SOLD
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, sea salt
In parallel to the Dreamy Landscape, this painting to me represents summer visits to the beach, sitting on the sand and looking out towards the water. No pressure, no work, just zen.
Monashees Sunset, 2022 - 10x10" mini - SOLD
This painting was created to showcase the amazing sunset as viewed from Big White Ski Resort (Kelowna, BC). My goal was to contrast the soft watercolour-style sky with the hard-edged violet mountains. While my paintings often include texture, this one is all about flow.
Mixed Media (acrylic paint, gesso, liquid asphalt) on canvas
Monochromatic Landscape, 2022 - 10x10" mini - SOLD
When the snow starts to blow, colours dim. We know that the pine trees are still green under the snow, but the landscape looks like a b&w photo. This monochrome effect inspired me to paint this landscape in shades of taupe. The calm palette is balanced by the movement of the swirling snow.
Mixed Media (acrylic and latex paints, liquid asphalt) on canvas
River View, 2022 - 20x40" - SOLD
*Collection of Kristina Pilypaitis*
Rather than working from a specific photograph, for this painting I relied on my imagination. I knew that I wanted sky reflected in water, and areas of green... along with some pine trees. I'm especially happy with how the roots are showing, even though in real life they are under the surface - like human emotions?
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt
Craggy Pine, 2021 - 12x16" - SOLD
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized), sandy soil
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the materials is intentional
Some people see this as a "Group of Seven" painting. While this was in no way my intention, I can understand where they are coming from! It's hard to look at an actual Ontario landscape without seeing something that Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven might have chosen to paint.
Another Ottawa River Sunset, 2021 - 12x16" - SOLD
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
Nothing like a summer dinner on a patio, enjoying that calm twilight hour, and watching the sun slowly turn the 3D landscape into a silhouette.
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
*Collection of Verena Schleich*
The sun is still beneath the horizon, but the very first light is starting to push that navy blue curtain of night aside. Around midsummer, this can happen as early as 4:15 am. On this particular morning, the sky was still dark when I heard the first bird start to sing. Others joined in and I watched the stars fade as the light grew. The title is a line from Leonard Cohen's Anthem: "The birds they sang, at break of day. Start again, I heard them say. Don't dwell on what is passed away, or what is yet to be." Words to live by, from the prophet of our time.
As is often the case, this painting surprised me, by offering connections beyond those I consciously intended. I see the eternal cycle of day and night, and the passage of time. I also see the life force of love, causing the trees to grow, but also causing them to lean into each other. Maybe the drama is there after all, just under the surface!
Please note that this piece is signed on the side of the canvas, instead of my usual bottom right...
Night Sky (Spirits Rising) - 2021 - 16x12" - SOLD
*Collection of Mohamed Farazi*
My original intention was simply to create a night sky using a darker colour as a base, maybe even hinting at some Northern Lights. I think I was subconsciously influenced by the discovery of unmarked graves on the grounds of residential schools, and images of candlelight vigils. Their spirits rise, but that does not excuse the fact that we, as a society, failed them while they were alive. We have to do better.
Latex and acrylic paints
Ottawa River Sunset, 2021 - 12x36" - SOLD
*Collection of Nastassia Guarda*
Loosely based on another "car window" photo. This one was shot in Cumberland, Ontario, looking north across the river.
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
The Blue Hour, 2021 - 20x10" - C$120.00 - SOLD
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
There's that brief half hour when the sun has just set, but the sky is not yet dark. Everything seems to go still - the birds go quiet, and the wind often drops, as though the world is holding its breath. It's probably my favourite time of day. In this interpretation (yes, it's another Big White view), textures and colours dominate - my go-to Elements of Art, as usual!
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt
Rainbow Sky with Wavy Clouds, June 2021 - SOLD
During June of 2021, I was inspired to create a series of paintings for Pride Month. For this one, I used latex and acrylic paints on an 8x10"" canvas panel.
*Soutar Family Collection*
This is the smallest piece in my Pride Month series, but probably my favourite clouds ever! Because it is painted on canvas panel, I decided to add a black frame (not pictured), which completed the composition nicely.
Small Rainbow Sky #1, June 2021 - SOLD
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized).
*Soutar Family Collection*
As part of my Pride Months series, I painted three 10x10" minis. Each one shows a view of the sky and the ocean, from a border of land. I like that they show turbulence, but also the light of the sun shines through. Life can sometimes be difficult - sometimes we all need to be reminded that there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Night Sky with Pines, 2021 - 10x8" - SOLD
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
*Private Collection*
Another cottage lake view, gazing out the window at the stars. The night sky is amazing without the light pollution of the city.
A Simple Cottage Sunset, 2021 - 8x10" - SOLD
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
*Collection of Amelia Isaac*
Sky above, lake below. Peace.
Rainbow Sky, June 2021 - 18x24" - SOLD
Acrylic and latex paints
*Collection of Nyse Macdonald*
This piece was an emotional response to Pride Month. The basic composition was inspired by photos shot seaside in PEI. The stormy effect seems appropriate, given the struggles faced by many non-binary members of our society. Time to recognize the beauty of every single person on the human spectrum.
Abstract Seascape #1, 2021 - 18x24" - SOLD
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, gold pigment powder
*Collection of Verena Schleich and Jon McLean*
Memories of summer visits to the beach with Grandma and the cousins... This particular painting also represents a turning point in my artistic style.
Rainbow Sky Seashore, June 2021 - 10x12" - SOLD
The final painting for Pride Month 2021. Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized), conte crayon.
*Private Collection*
Perhaps more next June...?
Another Starry Night, 2021 - 12x16" - SOLD
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
*Collection of Nyse Macdonald*
After I finished my Craggy Pine painting, I realized that I had created a composition that was roughly the reverse of van Gogh's Starry Night. Once that thought entered my mind, of course I had to try my hand at this homage to the great Vincent.
Spring Thaw with Birches, December 2021, 16x16" - SOLD
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized). Painted on a cradled birch panel, and finished with epoxy resin.
*Shelley O'Briend/Vroom Family Collection*
This piece represents the very end of winter, just before the leaves start budding on the trees. While I generally paint with some kind of photographic reference, I came up with this composition by just looking out my window and observing nature. As usual, the background and the trees themselves are highly stylized, yet they yet the overall effect is somehow representational of actual scenery.
Dramatic Cottage Sunset, 2021 - SOLD
*Soutar Family Collection*
We are lucky enough to be able to spend our down time in the Madawaska Highlands, at a cottage on Centennial Lake. This is where I do most of my painting, and it's also where I draw much of my inspiration! Our back deck faces north west, so we get to enjoy amazing sunsets. This one was particularly dramatic - the sun was already below the horizon, and it looked as though the navy blue curtain of night was being pulled down over the hot pink in the sky. Campfire and s'mores, anyone?
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized). This one is painted on a 16x16" cradled wood panel, and finished with epoxy resin.
Farm Country, July 2021 - 20x20" - SOLD
*Collection of Jill Elizabeth Fokes*
Inspired by the view out the car window while driving through Chatham-Kent in southern Ontario. The flat farmland and drainage ditches reminded me a bit of fields in the Netherlands, which I had not expected. It's a very beautiful area.
Mixed media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt, powdered marble, gold pigment powder
Turquoise Sky, July 2021 - 20x20" - SOLD
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, liquid asphalt (rubberized)
*Soutar Family Collection*
Sometimes, driving into the sunset feels like taking off into space... The sky is so dramatic, while the landscape fades to black. In this case, I couldn't resist trying to capture the vivid turquoise.
A Crack in the Clouds, July 2021 - 12x36" - SOLD
*please note that any cracking or crazing of the paint is intentional*
We love to ski Big White in Kelowna, BC. This painting depicts the feeling of standing on the mountain as clouds and snow sweep in, obscuring the view. There's always a silver lining... When the weather turns inclement for skiing, then it's time to warm up in front of a cozy fire!
Mixed Media - latex and acrylic paints, silver powdered pigment
Full Moon Setting, 2023 - 10x10" mini - SOLD
This piece was inspired by a photo posted on Instagram by the good people at Clos du Soleil winery in Keremeos, BC. It's a favourite spot for us to visit, and the setting is spectacular. This painting reflects my obsession with Payne's Grey, a colour which can be used to create the softest sky blue or the darkest almost-black midnight blue, depending on how it is used.
Mixed Media: acrylic, latex, and spray paints
Midnight Moon, 2022 - 10x10" mini - SOLD
There's something about a full moon... This one was painted during the March full moon, also known as the Worm Moon. The name of this moon is not terribly appealing, but the meaning - of worms that appear as the soil warms in spring, inviting the robins and other birds to feed - is more so! In this piece, I added some silver and gold metallic paint to the clouds, as moonglow.
Mixed Media: acrylic and latex paints, sea salt
It's Spring in the Valley, 2021 - 10x10" mini - SOLD
One amazing experience offered by the Kelowna area of BC is the ability to enjoy at least two seasons in one day! This piece, more representational than my usual abstract landscapes, shows winter on the mountain, with a glimpse of spring in the valley. It's quite literally possible to ski or snowshoe in the morning, and golf or hike in the afternoon. Inspiration on all levels!
Acrylic and latex paints
Sunrise Sky, 2020 - acrylic paint - SOLD
Spending time up on any mountain is so special. We are privileged to be part of the Big White (Kelowna, BC) family, site of endless inspiration. Pictured here: pine trees silhouetted against the sunrise sky.
Shining Through, 2021 - acrylic paint - SOLD
When the sun sinks low enough at end of day, its light seems to burn through the tree branches. A special time, and the inspiration for this piece.
First Star, 2021 - acrylic paint - SOLD
When the sun starts to set, you can start watching for the first star! It's a beautiful moment, suspended between day and night, and a daily miracle.
